MERCURY SQUARE JUPITER
This aspect is a seat of inner tensions. The tension of the square gives us motivation. Squares are dynamic aspects that give us the drive to succeed. What begins as an inner problem is overcome or accepted, and then becomes a door to understanding.
Mercury rules the mind, mental energy and the power of mental pursuasion. Mercury is the sign of mental telepathy, the thinking mind and things compart-mental-ized in the mind. Jupiter is lucky, adventurous and abundant. Jupiter is very benevolent, generous and philanthropic. Jupiter rules religion and higher education.
This square is quite a challenge to say the least. Mercury naturally rules Gemini (the 3rd house) and Jupiter naturally rules Sagittarius (the 9th house). Gemini and Sagittarius are opposing signs, as do the 3rd and 9th houses. So not only do these two planets represent a natural opposition, they are squaring each other at a very sharp right 90 degree angle like someone sticking their elbow in your side and grinding it. Both Mercury and Jupiter rule the two signs of communication, talking, speaking, writing, publishing, traveling, transportation, learning and educating. These two planets also rule these subjects at different levels of communciation, learning, expression and moving about the locale, country or world.
Now remember that Jupiter will E-X-P-A-N-D whatever it touches and when it expands Mercury, then this reults in grandiose and exaggerated thinking. With this placement, remember the phrase, "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread." This is the classic placement for grandiose thinking that is just too 'out there' for realization. There is a rush to action in an attempt to get projects accomplished that are just too far out of reach for the individual's circumstances, talents, skills, capacity or time that is required. Unless Saturn is well placed or aspected during this square, then little will get done, accomplished, fixed or off the ground. This is just flat out unrealistic optimism.
There are a lot of ideas being thrown around, plans being made, schedules laid out and bags being packed but none of it really goes anywhere. There are just so many options that you may not be sure which way to go or which plan (path) to follow. It all sounds so optimistic, wonderful and highly inflated and IT IS! Promises will not be kept and this energy bites off more than it can chew. Again, unless Saturn is near to discipline the individual, you can expect a lot of talk and no action. It's just flat out 'lip service' from these two communicative planets (Mercury and Jupiter). Often there is discrepancy between the individuals beliefs and the actual truth.
The rush to judgment with this aspect is very strong wherein decisions are being made on insufficient information. Details get lost in the process because Mercury is also the planet of details, methods and scientific precise calculation. Details, details, details! While projects are being attempted in a rush, the last thing you may be concerned about is the details. Oh details, details, details. If this aspect is screaming anything at you, it's PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS! "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread." You must be aware of the negative potential in your actions.
This placement often gets the mind (Mercury) and feelings (Jupiter) fighting with each other. Remember, Jupiter is the higher octave of the Moon, so feelings are heightened going up against Mercury's mindset. Jupiter rules the higher thinking mind, philosophy, religion and philanthropy. These two planets are not going to agree on how to get things accomplished.
Concentrate on listening because this aspect is a very hard challenge to tame. Sometimes this square shows an aversion or mental block to religion or philosophical thinking where you will not want to listen simply because you have closed the open-mindedness window of Jupiter.
This next sentence may be tough to hear but someone needs to say it. This aspect lacks common sense. This aspect screams USE YOUR HEAD! This is the classic placement for the person who lacks common sense. It's like picking up a hitchhiker who is stumbling drunk with a pistol in their hand. It doesn't take a genius to keep on driving but the individual with this placement may think the hitchhiker was just tired of standing and that's why they were swaying and stumbling and they thought the pistol they were holding were gloves. REALLY? Well, that's how ridiculous this aspect can cause a person to think. It sounded like a Good idea at the time.
This aspect also cannot keep a secret. Somehow, someway, that secret information just comes blabbering out of the mouth. The minute someone says, "Don't tell anyone I told you but . . . " then that is the tell tale sign not to trust that person because they will tell your secrets too. This aspect in the natal chart blabs secrets. Even if they don't mean to, somehow, someway, they will divulge that secret confidential information and end up saying, "I didn't mean to, it just came out." This aspect is a salesperson's easy prey because the individual with this placement (or under the spell of this aspect) will fall for all kinds of deals, MLM (multi-level marketing) or get rich quick schemes. In sales this person is called "a lay down" because they walk in with a couch on their back and they are an easy sell.
This placement also causes one to have an intellectually inflated ego. This is mental pride. There is excessive talking and bragging in a bombastic way with the intention of impressing others. The bombastic ways are inflated without any meaning. In other words, it's a lot of hot air. If you are wondering, no Donald Trump does not have Mercury square Jupiter.
