After hurricane season last year (2023) and paying attention to what Floridians were doing, I became serious about making ice. Every single spare spot in our freezer(s) is packed with ice. Every container that I empty, whether that is an empty ketchup bottle, an empty carton of half n' half, or a plastic gallon of milk, I wash it out and fill it up with water and into the freezer it goes. Every little empty space has a block of ice.
Even when a girlfriend comes over and brings her own preferred bottled iced tea drink, I save her bottles and use them to make ice filling the smaller spaces in the freezer(s).
DO NOT PACK YOUR FREEZER TOO TIGHTLY AS YOU WILL NEED AIR TO CIRCULATE.
The minute you open the freezer, warm air will rush in and fill any empty space. You CANNOT have an empty space in your freezer. In a grid down situation of unknown length, the food in the freezer will be Good for about 48 hours without blocks of ice. If the freezer is half-full then we are talking 24 hours. But if that half full freezer is packed with blocks of ice, then you have a better chance of saving your food for an extended period of time. I recommend keeping a couple of turkeys in the freezer as well. We all know how long it takes for a turkey to defrost in the refrigerator, much less the freezer. I bought them on sale for .50 cents a pound. In fact, I bought seven (7) of them. I froze two (2) of them and pressured canned the other five (5) including making turkey broth with the bones.
I have included some pictures below from our refrigerator freezers and our deep freeze. Even if you have a generator, you still need to make ice. If you have a gas-powered generator, then you need gas. This could become a problem if you don't have a stock of gas, then you better have ice to keep that food frozen. If you have an electric generator, then that is a HUGE problem in grid-down, because hey, GRID DOWN! Then there is the option of a solar powered generator. Think of every problem that could arise, then solve that problem before it arrives.
