Folks, you MUST start thinking of 'calorie dense food', meaning food that contains high amounts of calories relative to their weight. Consider the ease or difficulty the following list will be to prepare in case of a 'grid down' situation.
You MUST consider opening a can either through a hand-held can opener or a pop top. Consider every little thing and maybe even take you and your family through a 2-day grid down practice run to see how you act, react and what you will need. Some food will simply require adding boiling water or heating.
Does the food have to be kept cold or frozen, and can you do that in a serious grid-down situation?
In a serious long-term grid-down situation, empty calorie foods are likely, which means foods whose calories provide energy and sustenance, but very little nutritional value, so prep empty calorie foods as well. All food whether you like it or not, could save your Life or a family member, neighbor or stranger.
You can even use foods that you don't like or eat to barter with someone for something you didn't prepare for like maybe - 'coffee' or 'hot chocolate'.
While you may poo-poo this list, maybe everyone is not as fortunate as you, but as you may soon find out, beggars can't be choosers. Well you can, but it might mean the difference between you and your family eating and not eating.
Write down this list and check it off as you grow your pantry.
