MYLAR BAGS ZipLoc or non-Zip
I do use the Mylar Bags. I use the thicker type with the ZipLoc™. I also use a flattening hair iron to seal the area above the ZipLoc™. Why buy a sealer machine when you can use your flattening iron? There are Mylar Bags without the ZipLoc™, but I believe if its worth doin', it's worth over doin'. There is a great video below on mylar bags. Also, you can reuse these bags even if they are heated sealed. It is explained in the video below.
5 GAL. FOOD GRADE BUCKET with Gamma Lid
I do use food grade buckets. Lids for 5 gal. buckets are purchased separately. You can get them at the big box hardware stores. Some will carry Gamma Lids and some will not. The gamma lid is pictured here.
You can certainly purchase a regular snap lid for a few bucks. I bought my buckets at Home Depot and my Gamma Lids at Rural King.
FOOD SAVER BAGS Without the Machine
If you have Food Saver Bags™ and no machine or your machine is broke, just use your hair flattening iron. Easy Peasy!
USE FLATTERNING IRON to seal Mylar or Food Saver Bags
If you have the bags and a broken machine, just use your flattening iron or buy one. A flattening iron is a heck of a lot cheaper than a machine.

BALL MASON JARS Reg. or Wide-Mouth
Opt for glass and mylar bags before using plastic. Using wide-mouth canning jars you can get your whole hand in there if you are water glassing eggs.
MISCELLANEOUS STORAGE CONTAINERS Plastic or Glass
Save any and all containers, especially the hardest plastic containers because mice cannot chew through super-hard plastic. These are perfect for storing rice, beans, pasta, etc. You will still need to use oxygen absorbers.
You can also get food grade storage buckets for FREE from bakeries and deli counters, including Wal-Mart, grocery stores, sandwich shops, donut shops, etc. Just give them a call and they are usually happy to have someone come pick them up. Folks, are on to this so get there or go without.
We have a couple of cats, Pepe LePew and Penelope (Penny) and we live rurally, even still, it's a Good idea to make certain your house is sealed of any little tiny entrances that mice can sneak in. Consider putting glue traps or some form of traps around your food storage.
Glue traps will also trap spiders. Keep in mind spiders LOVE cardboard and brown paper bags. Just sayin'. See videos below.
