Activities of Daily Living
August 26th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

In what way am I blind and just refusing to see the obvious?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

If you know someone who hasn't bathed or is appears unkempt, it could be a sign that he or she is depressed. When people are sad or depressed, they will neglect themselves. For a quick pick-me-up, pick someone else up.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Restlessness has its advantages. If you are restless, then get up and put that energy to Good use. Restlessness is an inability to remain at rest. Unused restlessness is wasted energy. Do something!

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Wipe your seats! Think of all the places where butts sit and clean it. Vacuum your couches and the seat in your car. Clean your kitchen, dining and living chairs. And lastly, clean that toilet!

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Stop collecting and start selling. There are multiple sites to help you make money off your stuff. Even Facebook users have created pages in their area (town) where users can post items to sell, trade or buy. Start selling and make some money.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Barter: exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money. You swap toys, clothes, furniture, cars, time, work, services, etc.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Salads come in all shapes and forms. When eating a lettuce salad, monitor your ingredients. Piling ingredients onto your lettuce may be anything but a healthy and may cost you calories rather than save you calories. You are not an animal, so don't eat like one.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Choose two (2) of the 'Vitamin B6' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.

DESCRIPTION: Vitamin B6 is a multi-function nutrient which promotes mental and physical health. The body is unable to store B6 so it must be replenished every day. It is soluble in both water and alcohol. It is rapidly inactivated in the presence of heat, sunlight or air. It is essential in the metabolism of tryptophan and is needed for utilization of certain other amino acids. Deficiencies could include dermatitis around the eyes and mouth, carpal tunnel syndrome, neuritis, anorexia, nausea and vomiting. It is needed for the proper absorption of Vitamin B12. It is involved in more bodily functions that any other nutrient.

FOOD SOURCES: Alfalfa sprouts, avocados, banana, bee pollen, beef, beets, bell pepper, blackstrap molasses, Brewer's yeast, brown rice and other whole grains, buckwheat sprouts, cabbage, cantelope, carrots, chicken, corn, eggs, fish, grains, greens, lemon, meat, nutritional yeast, nuts, oats, oranges, peanuts, peas, prunes, raisins, soybeans, spinach, spirulina, all kinds of sprouts, sunflower seeds, green vegetables, wheatbran, wheatgerm, wheatgrass, whole wheat, and walnuts.
