Activities of Daily Living
August 21st

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

When I respond to an invitation, do I give a definitive answer or commitment (yes or no) or do I respond with "I'll try" or "Maybe"?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Hygiene is about the promotion and preservation of health through cleanliness. Health is the state of being free of illness or injury. Many health conditions begin with a lack of attention to hygiene. In other words, we caused it. Think of any issues that you may have that may have been caused by inattention to your hygiene

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Your 'Ideal Exercise Heartbeat Rate Per Minute' = 220 minus your age. So take your age and subtract it from 220 and that will be your ideal exercise heartrate per minute. This is the highest limit of what your cardiovascular system can handle during physical activity. If your heartrate goes over your ideal exercise heartrate then it is overexertion and too strenuous on your cardiovascular system.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

When the sock monster in the dryer eats one of your socks, then use the spare sock as a duster. Stuff the sock with another odd sock, put it on a yardstick and dust hard to reach places. You can also use it to clean cobwebs in the higher corners of the house.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

There are Good habits and bad habits. The bad habits will cost you the most money and will take away from your health rather than add to your health. For instance, the average smoker will spend between $1825 - $2555 a year on cigarettes. Acknowledge your bad habits and put a price tag on them. That price may also mean that it costs you your life.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Work smarter, not harder. Being efficient, organized and resourceful can help you get more accomplished in the least amount of time. While it is great to manage your time well, it is even better to manage your energy well. Working more does not always get the job done but working smarter will.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

At the start of the day, you should already have a Good idea of what you are having for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Your meals should have been planned and put into place. In this way, impulse food choices are eliminated because the decision has already been made.
