Activities of Daily Living
August 18th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

How do I respond to invitations from others?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

If you blow your nose and nothing comes out, the clog is actually from inflamed blood vessels in your sinuses. Blowing harder will not help, in fact it will create even more inflammation or propel the mucus further into your sinuses creating a secondary infection. Give your nose a break and wait until it gets runny to blow again.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Butterfly Ab Workout: Lay on your back and place the soles of your feet together. Relax your knees and let them drop to the side. Place your hands behind your head, with elbows out. Tightening abs, lift chest and shoulders straight up as if you are trying to touch your nose to the ceiling, then release back down. Do 10 to 12 reps.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Use rubber gloves to pick up pet hair. Just slide them on and run your hands over the hairy areas of your home. Using rubber gloves to pick up human hair works well too. I have really long hair, so long strands of my hair tend to show up everywhere. Submerge your gloved hands in water and the hair will come right off. This is no different than using a rubber roller, only cheaper.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Check your accounts (checking, saving, credit card, stocks) every single day. Know your balances and limits. If you see one strange charge of every $1 or $2 then you must investigate because this is how fraud begins. That one tiny amount is usually a criminal testing your account and your financial alertness.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Larry Page, co-founder of Google said, "Always deliver more than expected." If you only do what is expected of you, then what is so Good about that? (Actually, Jesus said it first.) Anyone can do what is expected but very few will do more than what is expected. Successful people always go beyond limitations, their own or others.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Use 15 minutes today to research variations of one of your favorite meals. Whether that is meatloaf, beef tenderloin, baked chicken or tofu casserole, use 15 minutes today to find a healthier variation of it. Use the full 15 minutes.
