Activities of Daily Living

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Elbows do not need much attention even though they get a workout being leaned on, bumped and rubbed all day. Elbow skin is thicker to protect the joint but it could still use some Love. Use an exfoliating puff on the elbows to keep build-up to a minimum.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Make a list of the parks in your area and use it as a 'bucket list' to visit over the next several weeks. If you have 10 parks listed, then you should have visited those 10 parks sometime over the next 10 weeks. While you are there, go for a walk, play frisbee or kick a ball around with your partner or children.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

I can not stand having an abundance of various household cleaning products. My two mainstays are baking soda and ACV (apple cider vinegar). Use ACV to clean your house. Mix ACV with water in a spray bottle and wipe off down surfaces with a clean cloth.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Being more conscious of what you own will make you more conscious of actually having money. Let's put it this way, if you owe money on something then you do not own it. Whether it is food in your belly or the sheets you are sleeping on, it feels better when it is actually paid for and not owed.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Give yourself time to enjoy your morning and wake up. If that means you wake up 10 minutes earlier, then that is what it means. Starting the day behind, rushed or disorganized can not feel Good and must take a lot of work to maintain the chaos. Make your Life easier by giving yourself 10 extra minutes.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Cook entire meals just to freeze them. There are plenty of days when I do not feel like cooking, so I make more of what I am cooking, only to freeze the majority of it. For instance, if I make baked chicken breasts for 2 people, I actually make baked chicken breasts for 8 people and freeze the rest. 2 chicken breasts per container.
