Father, today's reading shows how Jesus took every opportunity to teach others about You. I always wondered why in the world He would ignore His own family and put others before them. The more I thought about it, He wasn't putting others before His family, He was putting You before everyone. He was in the middle of teaching spiritual truths about You and was not going to be interrupted by anyone, including His own mother and brothers. This is where the order of relationships and their priority comes into focus. So often we prioritize our list saying that You are at the top, then family, then friends, then country . . or God, family, country, friends but yet the way we operate our lives has no order at all, especially where You are concerned. The opportunity to teach others about You was not lost of Jesus. Through His own actions He showed that You are indeed first and The Priority, even above His own physical world family.
Today's reading also reminds me to nurture my relationships and be fully present in all of them. Throughout all of my days, I have met so many people and now I think back and wonder what I did with that opportunity. Not what they did, but what did I do? How did I handle the relationship, whether it was family, friends, co-workers, volunteers, servers, clerks, neighbors or being in-service to someone? In that moment with them, was my relationship with them a reflection of You and how You would have wanted me to be? If all of my relationships are a reflection of You, what does that say about my relationship with You?
Thank You for this reminder that You are always there for me and I should always reach out and connect with You, first.
Through Jesus Christ's Precious Blood, Most Sacred Name and Most Holy Face. ~Amen
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke
Luke 8:19-21
[Jesus said to them . . . ]
19 Then His mother and His brothers came to Him, but they could not reach Him for the crowd.
20 And He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You."
21 But He said to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the Word of God and do it."
