For a more enriching experience,
go down on your knees to pray or take it one step further
and prostrate yourself (lay face down) on the floor while praying.
Father, today's reading reminds me of my childhood and when myself and the other children would say to each other, "Who died and made you boss?" "Who gave you the right?" This is essentially what the chief priests, elders and scribes were asking Jesus. They were use to having all of the authority and Jesus was showing them through His words and actions just how much power and influence they really had. They sought to trap Jesus through a line of questioning. Jesus agreed to answer their question on one condition, that they answer His question, but they could not answer His question. If they answered His question saying that John the Baptist's work was Divine, then they would have to accept Jesus as the Messiah because John the Baptist was accepted as the real prophet and John the Baptist would have been right.
Turning this to myself of basically saying, "Who died and left me boss?", when I'm standing in my ego, which begs the question, "Who do I think I am? "Where do I get my authority?" (if I have any).
Thank You for this awareness today of my own self-crowned authority. I will check myself and be more aware of my own ego, so You will not have to do it or help me down off my self-made tower. Thank You! I get it!
Through Jesus Christ's Most Precious Blood, Most Sacred Name and Most Holy Face, I thank You for this awareness. Amen~
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark
Mark 11:27-33
27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to Him,
28 and they said to Him, "By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?"
29 Jesus said to them, "I will ask you a question; answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men? Answer Me."
31 And they argued with one another, "If we say, `From heaven,' He will say, `Why then did you not believe Him?'
32 But shall we say, `From men'?"
-- they were afraid of the people, for all held that John was a real prophet.
33 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
