Am I thirsty for attention, fame, honor, importance or recognition? If so, who is my target audience? Family, friends, internet, public?
"Don't confuse fame with success. Madonna is one; Helen Keller is the other."
~Erma Bombeck
I keep myself humble and practice being in-service to others every single day.
For a more enriching experience, go down on your knees to pray or take it one step further and prostrate yourself (lay face down) on the floor while praying.
Father, today's reading below reminds me of all the times when I felt the thirst for attention or the desire to be first. Even if I did not deserve it or earn it, I have felt that unquenchable thirst to be first, recognized, picked out or called upon. When I think deeper about being called upon or picked out, I realize that I have been called upon and picked out. You have called upon me! You have picked me out! You have chosen me to be in-service to others and work Your plan. I have noticed that there is something within all of us that makes us say, "I just want to help people." It is an innate desire that You placed within us that makes us want to help others. The problem is when we turn it into self-serving and personal attention instead of in-service and being attentive to others. Helping others always seems to have a feel Good component to it, which we should always take care to remain humble rather than allowing it to puff up our ego. My motivation should be to please You first, rather than myself and to serve rather than serving myself. Thank You for this wonderful awareness of what it means to be in-service.
Through Jesus Christ's Most Precious Blood, Most Sacred Name and Most Holy Face, I thank You for this awareness. Amen~
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matthew 20:20-28
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zeb'edee came up to Him, with her sons, and kneeling before Him she asked Him for something.
21 And He said to her, "What do you want?" She said to Him, "Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom."
22 But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?" They said to Him, "We are able."
23 He said to them, "You will drink my cup, but to sit at My right hand and at My left is not Mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father."
24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers.
25 But Jesus called them to Him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.
26 It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave;
28 even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His Life as a ransom for many."
