Activities of Daily Living
September 25th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

Who or what am I showing people that I am?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

The proper way to cut toenails is straight across. Avoid trimming too close to the skin or rounding the corners of the nails because this can cause painful, ingrown toenails. If for 'any' reason you cannot reach your toenails then consider treating yourself to a professional pedicure at least once a month.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Door frame squats are the easiest squat to tighten your tush and legs, while improving posture and balance. Stand in the doorway, grab the door frame with feet shoulder width apart. Sit straight down, DO NOT stick your butt out, keeping your legs at a 90 degree angle 'as if' you were sitting on a chair. I even did these during pregnancy to keep my pelvic floor strong. 34 years later I still do door frame squats at various times during the day.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Use your dishwasher for other things besides dirty dishes. Use the dishwasher for light fixtures, vases, toys, personal items or even baseball caps and sun visors. Get creative with your dishwasher and make the most of its uses.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

If you feel compelled to spend money, then at least be honest with yourself as to why you are spending. Is it to be impressive, flamboyant, needy or fake. Spending can be immature and irresponsible. Using money is different than spending money. Make certain you know the difference between use and mis-use (spending) when it comes to money.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Time is a terrible thing to waste. An individual who consistently shows up late and makes excuses for being late is likely doing it on purpose in order to make their grand entrance and call attention to themselves. Sooner or later the Law of Averages says the individual would be on time. So if it is 'all the time' then it is on purpose, whether subconscious or conscious. Don't be one of those people.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Learn how to steam food because it will preserve the nutrients in your food. This goes for different variations of rice, vegetables, chicken and seafood. For added flavor, steam food on a bed of greens, herbs, scallions, lemon slices or greens.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Choose two (2) of the 'Aspartic Acid' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.

DESCRIPTION: Aspartic acid is a non-essential amino acid and is one of the products of pancreatic digestion. It is found throughout the body and has been found to increase vitality, so it has aids in fatigue. Aids in the removal of excessive ammonia from the body.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: In treating fatigue, chronic fatigue, aids in RNA and DNA formation.

FOOD SOURCES: High protein foods like eggs, dairy, meat and nuts.
