Activities of Daily Living
September 13th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

If a tree is known by the fruit it produces, what would I be known for producing?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Before you touch those magazines next to the toilet, think twice. If this is your house, DO NOT take these magazines out of the restroom and then lay them down somewhere else. If you take magazines and paperwork into the restroom with you at work or at home, my gosh KNOCK IT OFF! Ewwwwww!

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Rest, massage and take care of your weary feet. Put a can of anything underneath your desk and when you need a foot massage, just roll your foot over the can, back and forth, giving your foot a nice massage and energetic stimulation.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Clean out the dryer lint. It only takes a few seconds (not minutes). Even if you live in an apartment, it still only takes a few seconds to ensure the safety of the entire building. Overloaded dryer lint can cause fires. If you can, also clean the lint out the vent on the outside of the house or building.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Think before you choose to put something on your credit card. As a harsh example, charging food on a credit card means you will have eaten it, digested it, dropped it in the toilet and flushed it before you have even paid for it. Think before you charge it.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Having goals are nice but what do you intend to do about them? If you have a goal, write down what you intend to do in order make the goal a reality. Goals are not really anything unless you actively do something to make them happen.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Every so often I find it important to remind you that most people have enough food to last 2-3 days. In an emergency situation (disaster) grocery stores will run out of food in 2-3 hours. Folks, store your food. I consider myself a food prepper. At the very very least have enough food (canned and dry goods) and water for 2-3 weeks at all times.
