Activities of Daily Living

October 23rd

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

What do I calculate or anticipate?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Gum was originally made from chicle, which is a natural rubber (tree sap). When synthetic rubber was created out of polyethylene and polyvinyl acetate it started being used to replace the natural rubber in most gum. Are you chewing on rubber or gum? And how do you recycle gum? Stop the madness and stop chewing gum!

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

You may have heard the phrase, "Sitting is the new smoking." It has been confirmed that a sedentary lifestyle appears to be detrimental in the long-term. Converting your desk-style to a standing desk on and off throughout the day will help resolve many metabolic disorders including obesity and diabetes.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Housework can serve as a moving meditation. Put a sock on your hand and dust your house while saying prayers and talking to God. Speak out loud and then pause to listen for answers. Moving meditations are a great way to pray and listen. You don't need to be entertained, occupied or distracted every single minute, so turn off all sounds (TV, headphones, phone).

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

If you are traveling, pack your own food. This will not only save money but it will probably be more nutritious. While on the road, have a cooler in the car with drinks and food. Do not waste your hard earned money on expensive unhealthy food from a convenient mart or gas station.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

We all get the same 24 hours in our day. How you manage those 24 hours will dictate how much you get accomplished. You have to manage time to eat, sleep and travel time (driving, walking). Your day will be a reflection of your personal management, priority and spontaneity skills.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Make smoothies ahead of time and then pour them into ZipLoc baggies. Then put all of your single serving baggies into one huge freezer baggie. When you are ready to grab a smoothie, open it and put it in your smoothie mug and then off you go.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a very potent antioxidant. It helps to protect cells from free radicals. Free radicals are the byproducts of energy production, which means they are left over products. Even though there are ten common coenzyme Q's, Q10 is the only one found in human tissue. Because of this fact, Q10 tends to diminish with age and therefore must be supplemented in the diet. Preferably supplemented through food sources.
