Activities of Daily Living
November 6th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

In what ways do I need to redeem myself?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

The dreaded 'bacne' is like facial acne but it is on the back brought on by bacteria clogging the pores. Stop by a discount store and buy a back brush for the shower. Also, wash your sheets and pillowcase at least once a week. If you do not have time to change the sheets this morning, then strip your bed before you leave for work so you will remember to change the sheets when you get home.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

The ol' canned foot roll is perfect for stimulating the nerve endings in the bottom of your feet and increasing circulation. Since I work at a computer all day, I keep two cans under my desk at all times and roll my feet on and off all day long. You will notice that even your thighs and calves are getting a bit of a workout. It's a mini foot massage every time you do it.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Circulation is very important in one's daily Life, not only to the physical body but to the physical space as well. When housework is stagnate it is an indicator of the rest of an individual's Life. Make certain you circulate (in a circle pattern) through your home space checking, moving around and putting things in their proper place continually. This stimulates the flow of chi' (energy) and keeps your Life (energy) moving.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

There is no Good reason to carry all of your credit, debit and gift cards with you at the same time. This may show the amount of debt you have more than it shows how much money you have. Create a secret bank vault in your home where you keep extra cards, coupons and your spare change that you are saving. Remember November 2nd's financial posting?

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Keep your car clean. A messy car interior reveals disorganization and lack of respect for one's own personal property. Your car wants to make you happy, so make it happy by keeping it clean and organized. Keep things in your car that you will need in case of an emergency. Many of you spend a lot of time in your car, so searching for things in your car can make you very unproductive. A messy car can also reveal one's work ethic. Clean your car!

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Organize your dishes and cookware today. This is a wonderful moving meditation. The dishes, glasses and cookware that you no longer use, set it aside to donate tomorrow. You may have so many cooking utensils that you don't know what you have if and when you need it. This will also stimulate a better appreciation for things you have and a renewed desire to use them.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Choose two (2) of the 'VITAMIN K' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.
Get creative!

DESCRIPTION: Vitamin K can be formed by natural bacteria in the intestines. This is one very Good reason to take lactobacillus acidophilus (friendly flora). Vitamin K is needed for blood clotting and may also have a role bone formation, thereby preventing osteoporosis.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: Vitamin K is responsible for blood clotting. It aids in the prevention of internal bleeding, hemmorhages and aids in healing bruises. Vitamin K is vital for normal functioning of the liver, therefore Vitamin K converts glucose to glycogen. Glycogen is stored in the liver.

FOOD SOURCES: Vitamin K is found in alfalfa, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, dark green leafy vegetables, egg yolks, liver, oatmeal, oats, rye, safflower, soybeans and wheat. Side note --- Notice how green leafy vegetables seem to be a common theme in a lot of the nutrients that are posted daily.
