Activities of Daily Living
March 9th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

Do I feel appreciated or taken more seriously by strangers more than I do by those closest to me?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Open your mouth and say, "Ahhhhh." Tonsilith's or tonsil stones are collections of matter that look like little rocks embedded in your tonsils, made of food particles, dead cells and oral bacteria which can form into hardened white balls and cause bad breath. This is different from 'exudate' which is a whitish discharge on the tonsils that appears when the throat is inflammed due to illness. Tonsilith's can be popped out or scraped off but can not be gargled away with mouthwash. Open your mouth and say, "Ahhhhh."

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

The majority of us have the same posture from typing, texting or driving and that is the curled forward shoulder. One great exercise to relieve shoulder pain is to squeeze together your shoulder blades (scapula's). The scapula is supposed to lay down flat on your back, not flare out like chicken wings. Squeeze your scapula's slowly together without making your neck muscles move, chest muscles move or your shoulders moving. It's a delicate and slow movement that should not be seen outwardly. Do these exercises while you walk, drive, type, etc.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

If your shower curtain liner is growing little critters on it (mold) then throw it in the washer with some towels and the towels will help scrub it clean. Even if the liner isn't growing critters on it, wash it anyway because the feeling of clean is contagious and you will want to keep the bathroom cleaner because of this awareness.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Go through your lotions, potions and gels in the bathroom. Trash them or use them. Look at them with dollar signs in your eyes. Just make certain you are aware of what you have so that you will stop buying more but different products without using what you have. If a product did not work for you, then throw it away or give it away. Just stop buying more and making a collection out of these products. Use it or lose it.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Instead of having limits put on you, choose to limit yourself. You know what your threshold is on booze, time, money, patience, etc. When you choose to limit yourself then Life becomes so much easier to live. You say -- who, what, when, where, why and how much. This is not meant to be acted upon with a chip on your shoulder. It's just common sense! Don't act like you don't know your limits because you do. You do have a shut off valve, so shut it off! Limit yourself so that it isn't done for you.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Get creative with lettuce. Boston lettuce can replace a taco shell because its a cradle for the meat. Iceberg lettuce can replace a hamburger bun with its thickness. Romaine lettuce makes a fantastic vegi or chicken wrap. The amount of carbs and calories you can cut with lettuce is outrageous. Get to the grocery store and buy your lettuce. Most of the nutrients I post below always say, 'green leafy vegetables'.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Choose two (2) of the 'Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.
Get creative!

FOOD SOURCES: Alfalfa sprouts, almonds, apples, apricots, asparagus, avocado, banana, beans, bee pollen, brewer's yeast, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cashews, cheese, cherries, chicken, currants, dates, eggs, figs, fish, garlic, grains, green vegetables, kelp, liver, meat, milk, nutritional yeast, nuts, onion, organ meats, parsley, poultry, prunes, rose hips, seeds, spinach, spirulina, sprouts of kinds, watercress, wheat germ, wheatgrass, wild rice, and yogurt.
