Activities of Daily Living

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Making baking soda sachets for your shoes or sprinkling baking soda in your shoes will absorb any nasty odor. I would not do this with leather and suede shoes because the moisture absorption can make the leather and suede material brittle. You can also sprinkle baking soda on your feet.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Squats: Stand tall with your feet spread a bit wider than shoulder-width apart. Hold your arms straight out in front of your body at shoulder level with your arms parallel to the floor. Keep your torso upright through the entire movement. Now with your lower back slightly arched, tighten your abs and lower body as you bend your knees. Pause, then push yourself back up to starting position by straightening your knees. That's one repetition. Do 15 to 20 repetitions.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Get a jump on your spring cleaning by purging. Give yourself a half hour to load up the trunk with things to take to a donation-location. Move quickly and with the intent of filling up your trunk. The less time you have to think about it, the more you are likely to purge. GO!

Imagine how much money you would have if you refused to spend your money on insignificant junk that just filled up space and that you only had to purge from your Life later. Make a deal with yourself that you will not spend any more money on insignificant junk that only takes us space and robs your checking account.

I know a man who is an executive for a big Company. When he hires someone new, he always walks them out to their car. He wants to see what the inside of their car looks like. This in turn gives him a glimpse into their personal Life and if they will be able to handle what he would be asking them to do for the Company on top of how they are handling their personal Life.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Humpday is a great time to regroup and get a handle on your thinking and think about what you will be eating the rest of the week. Boil those eggs, bake that chicken, cut up those vegetables and package it all in Zip Loc baggies, plastic ware and fun containers. Prepare some brainless grab and go food so you can eat hearty (literally) and healthy without thinking.

DESCRIPTION: Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid is the precursor of tyrosine. This is an important amino acid. It produces neurotransmitters in the brain to produce norepinephrine. It assists in learning, memory, clarity and elevates the mood. Therefore, it may aid in the treatment of depression.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS: It should not be taken by anyone suffering from high blood pressure, anxiety attacks, panic attacks, PKU (phenylketonuria), cancer or anyone taking MAO inhibitors. Women who are pregnant or lactating should also avoid using phenylalanine.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: It may assist in elevating the mood and treating depression.

FOOD SOURCES: Found in most foods but it is highest in those that are high in protein: dairy products and meats.
