Activities of Daily Living
January 7th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

Who do I think I am?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

If you are using a public shower or swimming pool (like at a gym) then you MUST use shower shoes or pool shoes. Fungal infections like Athlete's Foot are often contracted in showers, gyms, dressing rooms, swimming pool lockers, or other warm, damp areas where fungus can thrive. And by all means, dry your feet and in between your toes after showering, even at home.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Tadasana (Mountain Pose): Start with your feet together and your hands pressed together in the center of your chest. Stretch the crown of your head toward the sky. Take a deep breath, then relax your shoulders. Do not lock your knees. Keep breathing and remain here for a minute. Slowly stretch your arms above your head and then make a giant circle motion as your bring your arms to rest at your sides, palms facing out. Feel that stretch in your arms, shoulders, abdominal, all over. Do that 10 times.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Utilize hooks! Hooks are great for hanging up keys, hanging up coats and hanging up purses. Hooks keep things organized and off the floor. Adhesive hooks are perfect on the inside of cabinet doors in the kitchen or for concealing electrical cords. Some shower caddies slip off the showerhead neck a little too easy. Find a hook that can stand up against shower steam and hang the shower caddy on the opposite wall. It's bad Feng Shui to have your things piled down on the floor and it is an indicator of depression.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

If you are sharing joint resources (money, property) and one of you is lying about spending, then you should know that money is the number one reason for break-ups. Financial infidelity usually occurs to avoid confrontation, cover an addiction or it is out of fear. Financial infidelity is not cute, funny or cool. To say, "What? This old thing?" is irresponsible and immature if it is a new purchase. In a relationship where you are sharing money and property, it is important that both parties know the status of the finances, even if only one person writes the checks.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Look at the company you keep and you will see a reflection of yourself. My inner circle of closest friends has a strong 'work ethic' theme. We show up, we do not use excuses and we get our work complete. Over 90% of my tighter circle is self-employed (like myself) or they are in charge of the business where they work. We are incredibly productive individuals. We show up for work and we show up for each other. We also communicate by phone, not social media. You know what they say, "Birds of a feather flock together."

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Make your menu planning easier by declaring each night of the week a certain 'type'. I like to start the week on a celebratory note, so every Monday night is steak night. We have a chicken night, turkey night, Mexican night, vegi-only night, soup night, seafood night and pizza night (Sunday). Incidentally, I will use chicken or turkey on Mexican night, so we usually have red meat only one day a week. I will not even buy pasta, bread, boxed, packaged, canned, refined, baked or processed food. Ok the taco shells, but that's it! When I make turkey burgers they are wrapped in lettuce.
