Activities of Daily Living
January 13th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

Do I need to respond to every need? Is that response a savior mentality, control mentality, ego mentality or guilt mentality?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Acne forms when pores or hair follicles become clogged with dead skin and oil. When showering use a back brush or ask your partner to wash your back. It may also be an indicator that it is time to wash the sheets.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Make it a date! Nothing says you have to workout with the same person every day. Choose several people to exercise with during the week to hold each other accountable. Sometimes exercise does take a village.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

The easiest and fastest way to clean stainless steel appliances (both big and small) is with any vegetable oil or even olive oil. Using a non-abrasive cloth shine up your appliances using a small amount of oil.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Use reuseable shopping bags (totes). This makes you more aware of what you are buying and how much you buy. If I walk into the grocery store with only two reusables then I am self-limited on purchases because I absolutely refuse to walk out with my groceries in plastic bags.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Habits are one thing but rituals are a whole other breed of get 'er done. Rituals are more of a conscious effort, whereas habits are more of an unconscious action. There is commitment and deliberate thought in a ritual. Successful people are more ritualistic than habitual. Which one are you?

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Today I'm turning 20 lbs. of chicken into 16 qts. of chicken soup, which will be transferred into individual containers and put into the deep freeze. If you have a deep freeze, then fill it up with homemade pre-prepared food. If you do not have a deep freeze, then fill up your refrigerator freezer with homemade pre-prepared food instead of boxed or packaged food.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Choose two (2) of the 'IRON' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.
Get creative!

DESCRIPTION: Iron is vital in the formation of red blood cells (RBC's). Iron's most important function is its production of hemoglobin and oxygenation of RBC's. Iron is the mineral found in the largest amounts in the blood.

FOOD SOURCES: Iron is found in whole grains, green leafy vegetables, eggs, fish, liver, meat, poultry and enriched cereals and breads. Iron is also found in almonds, avocados, beets, blackstrap molasses, brewer's yeast, dates, dulse, egg yolks, kelp, kidney beans, lima beans, lentils, millet, parsley, peaches, dried prunes, pumpkins, raisins, rice, wheat bran, sesame seeds and soybeans.
