Activities of Daily Living
February 22nd

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

When was I given the opportunity to practice my skill set and responded wrong or not at all?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Clean out your purse or your wallet. These items get a workout and are a breeding ground for dirt and germs. Women's handbags will go from sitting on public restrooms floors to a tabletop or countertop. Ewwwwww!

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Remember the song "Maniac" from the movie Flashdance. You can burn 45 calories in 5 minutes by just running in place. That's 90 calories in 10 minutes. Google the video and you will see what I mean. Put the video on your phone and do it several times a day. You could easily burn 600 calories over 10 minute spurts here and there throughout the day.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Carpets and rugs are the largest reservoir of dust in your home. They house dirt, food, germs, insects, human hair, pet hair and skin cells. Home with hardwood floors are said to have 1/10th the dust of one with wall-to-wall carpets and/or rugs. This is why vacuuming is so important. Take the time to run the vacuum today over carpets and rugs.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Preventing expenses through maintenance and care is the best way to save money. Take care of your body and belongings through strict maintenance and cleaning by having a healthier respect for both. Your body and belongings will cost you money if you do not take better care of them.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Keep your car prepared for bad weather by keep emergency items handy. Store a case of bottled water, a box of protein bars, a couple of blankets, toilet paper and yeah even adult diapers in your car just in case you really really really gotta go and its too dangerous to get out of your car.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

People generally have on hand about 3 days worth of food. During a disaster the grocery stores will run out of food within 2 to 3 hours. Store plenty of food such as rice, beans, pasta, etc., that will keep for longer periods of time in case of an emergency.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Choose two (2) of the 'BORON' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.
Get creative!

DESCRIPTION: Boron is a trace mineral and is only needed in trace amounts. It helps metabolize calcium to maintain healthy bones. So why even take Boron if so little is required? In a group of post-menopausal women studied by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Boron was shown to significantly reduce the affect of calcium loss. So we can say that Boron is a sociable trace mineral with calcium and magnesium. It was also found that women who took Boron had double the blood level of the most active form of estrogen.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: Helps protect against the demineralization of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in our bones.

FOOD SOURCES: Almonds, cider, dates, fruits, grains, green leafy vegetables, nuts, peanuts, prunes, raisins, soybeans, and wine.
