Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.
Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.
Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends that you replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months. In our house we replace our toothbrush a lot more than that; it's not like toothbrushes are expensive. If you have a desk or locker at work, then leaving a toothbrush at work is certainly do-able. It's not always about your teeth. You want to keep your gums nice and pink or coral colored and not dark and beefy. Beefy gums are not a Good sign, which means you probably need to see your dentist. |
Working at a computer all day, you can do seated abdominal exercises. Sit on the edge of your chair, lean back and let your shoulder blades barely touch the back of the chair. Tighten your ab muscles and pull your knees toward your chest while you are leaned back. You should form a "V" sitting position, as you rest on your tailbone. You may need to rest your shoulder blades on the chair starting out. Straighten your legs, then bring your knees to your chest. Straighten your legs, then bring your knees to your chest. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat. |
I am a big believer in moving meditations, which means while you move, meditate. The ADLs are found under the 'Moving Meditation' button to your left. Laundry is a moving meditation. Washing dishes is a moving meditation. Vacuuming is a moving meditation. This puts a whole new spin on housework. If I were to sit down and meditate, I would probably fall asleep, so I need to move while I meditate. Use 15 minutes today to do housework while you meditate on that idea, thing, dilemma or situation. Do this preferably in silence. |
The buddy system works in many situations including diet and exercise. The buddy system also works with finances. It has been studied that friends with similar traits will pick up habits from one another, including Good habits. Make a pact today with a friend that involves using your money in smarter ways. And seriously, when coming up with smarter ways, make them come from the word 'smarter'. |

Frozen vegetables are better than no vegetables at all. Slice open a bag of frozen vegetables, put some in a container and heat it up at work for your mid-morning snack. Leave a shaker of your favorite spice concoction at work so you have it handy. That mid-morning snack will not only be hot on a cold winter day, it will remind you to eat healthy at lunch. It will be better to have a large helping of vegetables than a carb loaded snack that will rob you of energy. Remember, you have 24 hours in the day and you want that energy. |
