Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.
Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Am I a pessimist or a realist?
Confidence speaks volumes! I had a patient once who constantly bad-mouthed herself. She continually called herself names despite my efforts to convince her otherwise. Her favorite self-criticism was 'fatty'. One day I walked into the treatment room and said, "Hey, how ya' doin' fatty?" She said, "That's not nice!" I said, "Then stop calling yourself that and trying to convince me that it is True." |
If you are going to watch an abundance of TV, then at least get a piece of exercise equipment where you can let your brain mindlessly check-out while your attention is elsewhere. That might be a stationary bike, a glider, stairmaster, treadmill or some other form of mindless movement. |
Vinegar and newspaper is probably the easiest streak-free way to clean mirrors. Combine equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. You can use a clean cloth or paper towels but newspaper really does do the trick. |
The quickest and easiest way to pay off debt is to stop creating more debt. While it sounds easy enough to do, the temptation to hold onto your cash and put your purchase on credit is constant. Your desire to actually have money in the bank has to over-ride your actions not to have it. |
Listen to feedback, even if it comes in the form of criticism. While you cannot please everyone, part of growth is change. You must change in order to grow and you must grow in order to change. Puppies never stay puppies and babies never stay babies. |
You probably know what foods your body is sensitive or allergic to. If there are some foods that make you lethargic and tired, then plot out your 'day of demise' ahead of time. Rarely will I eat pasta but when I do, I acknowledge ahead of time that it's going to be a 'day of demise'. I never eat pasta without first acknowledging that lethargy and lack of productivity will be the end result. That usually stops me. |
