Activities of Daily Living
December 5th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

What do I feel called to do?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Cracked heels are really nothing more than oversight or a lack of proper foot care. There are many home treatments for cracked heals, the easiest one being the use of a hydrogenated oil or petroleum jelly on the feet. Put the oil or jelly on clean dry feet, then put on socks and wear them overnight. Doing this over the course of 3 or 4 days, your feet should have gotten progressively better.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

Standing Ab exercise that you can do during a commercial or on a break. Side-to-Side Punch Outs 4 x 30 seconds. Feet a little wider than shoulder width and your fists by your chin. Put your weight in your hips by sitting back into a quarter squat position. Punch to your left side with your right hand by rotating your core. Rotate back to the starting position while returning your hand to your chin. Repeat the movement while alternating sides for 30 seconds.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Take the time to fix what is broken or loose. Tighten screws on door handles, drawers and cabinets. These are easy fixes that require only a screwdriver, so there is no reason to have your world falling apart before your eyes. Just fix it! Home reflects Life. Make your Life easier, by fixing the easy things. Oil squeaky doors with 'WD40' and use 'Goo Gone' for sticky labels.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

I'm super-dooper conscious of using excess energy. It's not a cheap-thing, it's a green-thing. In warm weather I hang clothes outside on a clothes line to dry. In cold weather I hang clothes on hangers on the shower rod to dry. I use the dryer for towels (in the winter) and that's pretty much it. Even socks I will hang over the shower rod. If you use a laundromat, save yourself the money and just bring your wet clothes home to hang on the shower rod.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

It doesn't matter where you worked or where you work now, there is information and skill to be gained. When I first went into practice, I joined another doctor's practice and learned how not to run a practice. Learning from someone else's mistakes was an invaluable experience that I would not have gotten anywhere else, except myself. You just can't make some of that stuff up but you can sure as heck learn from it.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

There's a lot of baking going on this time of year and I tend to bake a lot of cookies. After the cookies have cooled, as I put them into the cookie jar or into a tin to give to someone else, I separate the cookies from each other with one square piece of wax paper. This keeps the cookies from sticking to each other. Just cut a bunch of squares and you are ready to rumble.
