Activities of Daily Living
December 22nd

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

Can I see God's favor and mercy on me or am I just too hung up on myself?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

If you are going to load up on sugar over the holiday season, then make certain to keep your mouth rinsed out. There is no sense in packing the sugar on your body and your teeth at the same time. Another great reason to drink more water!

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

We are not getting any younger. Practicing balance can help decrease the risk of falling. While standing, hold on to the back of a chair for stability and then lift one heel toward your buttocks. Hold for 30 to 45 seconds, 3X per leg. As stability increases, let go of the chair. This exercise will this work to strengthen your buttocks and quadriceps as well.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

An earth friendly mold cleaner is borax and water. Combine 1 cup of borax to 1 gallon of water. (1 to 16 ratio of borax to water). Borax is the alkaline archenemy of mold, which is why Borax works and why bleach doesn't work. Scrub the area with a somewhat abrasive material until mold is removed. Wipe area clean and dry the area. There is no need to completely rinse it off because borax inhibits any new mold from growing.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

There is no reason on earth to carry all of your credit cards at once, along with your checkbook. Not even in an emergency would you need all of that. Carry one single credit card (if you need a back-up to your debit card) and one single check folded and tucked into a special place in your wallet. Carrying all of your cards could be revealing all of your debt and not your credit.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

The company you keep is a reflection of yourself. If some individuals are not supportive or have a less than favorable influence on your Life, then it is probably time to separate yourself from their company. Also, those who are chatty about others, will be chatty about you too. Count on it! While these birds flock together then you can flap your wings and move on ... ahead! (Winky wink) If it is not possible to divorce or separate yourself from some individuals (family or co-workers), then limit your time or words when in their presence.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

I take food with me more than I do not. I'm on the road a lot and I always have food with me, including protein and fiber bars. I even keep a container of protein powder and a case of water in my car as well. When traveling by plane, you bet I have food in my carry-on tote so I won't be stuck eating crackers and fast food, and I will have enough for those in my row. If you are going to be obsessing over food, then go crazy, get healthy with it and take it with you.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Choose two (2) of the 'ISOLEUCINE' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.
Get creative!

DESCRIPTION: Pure Encapsulations - BCAA Capsules 90's is an essential amino acid that is part of a branched chain amino acid group with leucine and valine. These three should always be taken together. It is one of several essential amino acids needed in the diet and humans cannot synthesize it from simpler metabolites. Young adults require about 20 mg of this isoleucine per day per kg (or about 8 mg per lb) of body weight. It can be degraded into simpler compounds by enzymes. In a rare, inherited disorder called maple syrup urine disease, an enzyme that is not functioning in the common pathway of isoleucine, leucine and valine causes the buildup of certain metabolites in the urine, resulting in the characteristic odor from which the disease gets its name.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: It is needed to form of hemoglobin and regulates blood sugar levels. Therefore, if there is an imbalance, hypoglycemia could develop. It gets metabolized in the muscles and has to be taken with leucine and valine.

FOOD SOURCES: Almonds, beef, cashews, chicken, cottage cheese, eggs, fish, soy, lentils, liver, milk, and seeds.
