When I act on impulse, what is the result?
"Let the first impulse pass, wait for the second."
~Baltasar Gracian
I consider the outcome before I react.
For a more enriching experience, go down on your knees to pray or take it one step further and prostrate yourself (lay face down) on the floor while praying.
Father, today's reading is interesting as it brings to mind the impulsiveness of Peter. I can see how his impulsiveness was used to teach the rest of us how to live. Being a Christian is not easy as it takes an incredible amount of self-discipline to act and react appropriately. Peter often found himself grieving over his impulsiveness but then again got over it rather quickly and moved on once he 'got the get' of the lesson. Peter always got the lesson super fast. I can see why Peter was used in so many scenario's to teach the disciples. Peter had to learn the way in order to show the way once Jesus moved on to the next realm of existence. Jesus was showing us the difference between impulse with Faith and impulse without Faith. In this scene below, Peter's impulsiveness caused him to walk on the water toward Jesus, but then in his impulsiveness his fear overcame him and he began to sink. That is quite profound . . 'his fear' caused him to sink. WOW! It is interesting how Jesus sent the disciples ahead of Him and the physical distance between them was quite far. But then in an instant, in a snap, in the moment of the disciples need, BAM, Jesus was there. KA-BAM there He was! Just like that. Oh I just Love these deliberate examples that Jesus uses to show us The Way. It always boils down to Faith. No matter what, it is always boils down to Faith. Even in our impulse, Faith does make a difference.
Through Jesus Christ's Most Precious Blood, Most Sacred Name and Most Holy Face, I thank You for this awareness. Amen~
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matthew 14:22-33
22 Then He made the disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds.
23 And after He had dismissed the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone,
24 but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.
26 But when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately He spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear."
28 And Peter answered Him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water."
29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus;
30 but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me."
31 Jesus immediately reached out His hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?"
32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 And those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
