Activities of Daily Living
September 22nd

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

Through all the opportunities I have been given to connect with or have a relationship with others, what have I made of those opportunities?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

In a restaurant, nothing grosses me out more than seeing a food server tuck their 'receipt book' inside the back of their pants. That constant point of contact so close to fecal debris makes me sick. I will ask for a manager and then I will leave. It's hard to beat the 'ick factor' on that one.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

If you are over 50 or have a parent over 50 or even Love an adult over 50, share this tidbit of info. Research indicates that a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy for adults over 50. Inactivity often causes older adults to lose the ability to do things on their own and can lead to more hospitalizations, doctor visits, and use of medicines for illnesses.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Housework can be made enjoyable when you put on some music that you know and Love. Motivating music that has a pep in its step can help you get the job completed with enjoyment and timing. I always look at housework more as a 'moving meditation'. When I move, I meditate. Music can also help you be more mindful on the task at hand by giving you focus.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

It is imperative that you have a long-term goal when it comes to your finances, otherwise you will find yourself living from paycheck to paycheck on a constant yearly basis. A goal to just make it to the next day is not enough because that would be a short-term goal rather than a long-term financial goal. Set long term financial goals today.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

There are some people who will do the bare minimum and there are others who will do more than what is required. A strong sense of responsibility, integrity and quality is what will separate these two types of people into the two categories of 'getting by' and 'successful'. Those who just get by will settle and those are are successful never settle.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

When you have leftovers, make certain you mark the container with the date it was cooked and you will have an easier time determining whether or not it is still edible.
