Reflexology is a gentle art, a fascinating science and an extremely effective form of therapeutic foot
massage stimulating key acupressure points used by over 25,000 practitioners worldwide. Our feet
connect us to the ground and they are therefore a connection between our earthly and spiritual life. They
ground us literally and figuratively. When the reflexes are stimulated, reflexologists believe that the
crystal-like deposits on nerve endings are crushed and lactic acid is reduced and carried away by the blood.
An involuntary response is elicited in organs and glands connected by energy pathways to these specific
reflexes. The increased circulation carries away waste and allows the body to heal itself.

The body is divided into ten vertical zones: five on the right and five on the left. Zone one begins in the
thumb, travels to the hand, arm, shoulder, neck and face, down the front and back of the body, down the leg
and foot, and ends with the big toe.

	    Reflexologists successfully treat headaches including migraine; back, neck, shoulder arm and leg pain;
asthma; sinus problems; heart and lung difficulties; urinary problems; and even eye disorders. In December
1993, Obstetrics and Gynecology published the following single study: "They reviewed the response to
reflexology of the ear, hand, and foot in thirty-eight women with premenstrual symptoms. In this
randomized, controlled study, the subjects all believed that they were being treated with reflexology.
However, half were receiving simple massage not directed at specific points; the others got points
massaged on the ears, hands and feet which were selected because of their postulated connection to organs
that contribute to the symptoms of PMS-the ovaries, the uterus, portions of the nervous system, and
various hormone-secreting glands. The two groups reacted differently. Symptoms improved in only 17
percent of those who were simply massaged. By contrast, 46 percent of the group treated with
reflexology had a definite reduction in the severity of complaints."
