Father, like the apostles in the reading below, I too can be too afraid to know more and I don't want to hear 'the answer'. Sometimes I don't know if I want to know more, which causes me to step into denial, doubt or procrastination. This reading is similar to not wanting to hear the results of a laboratory test or a diagnosis from a doctor. There may be a feeling of impending doom or that medical procedures need to occur before wellness is achieved. This reading is all about rejecting what we don't wish to see.
Everything that was going down with Jesus was just too confusing for the apostles, especially with what they perceived the Messiah to be. "Being handed over to men" was just too scary to contemplate, so the meaning was hidden from them. There was just too much worry, doubt, fear and anxiety for them to handle the Truth. The apostles were spared these feelings for the moment because what was about to take place, needed to take place.
The reading begins with the apostles being "astonished by the majesty of God." Certainly they were all well aware of the majesty of You through the miracles Your Son Jesus performed, but they hadn't seen anything yet. The miracle of miracles was yet to come. Jesus told them He would be "handed over to men" as He prophesized His own betrayal and crucifixion, but they didn't want to hear that. They did not want to hear about His suffering and crucifixion. What they would all soon witness would be a miracle so great and magnificent, that it would make their head spin and surely they would fall down and glorify You. Everything Jesus did was about glorifying You and what You are capable of doing, including His ressurrection.
Thank You for this awareness today and helping me understand that there is a process that occurs when greatness is achieved by and through You. This process includes carrying my own cross and trusting You, just as Jesus carried His own cross and trusted You. Thank You for helping me see Your majesty in my Life and the miracles You perform every single day.
Through Jesus Christ's Precious Blood, Most Sacred Name and Most Holy Face. ~Amen
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke
43 And all were astonished by the majesty of God. While they were all amazed at His every deed, He said to His disciples,
44 "Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men."
45 But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying.
