Father, today's reading shows how in tune Jesus was with the plights of others and how He was moved 'with' compassion to help. Here He was making His way to the next city when He and His disciples came upon a funeral procession. Not only had the grieving woman lost her only son, she had lost her husband as well, so she was a widow and childless. This woman had not only lost the two Love's of her Life, she had lost her livelihood and happiness as well. Back in these times, the family was a person's financial security and when all of the family was gone, so was everything else. This woman had essentially lost everything. Jesus was moved from the sympathetic depths of His heart, He walked up to the coffin and commanded restoration of the deceased's physical Life. To walk up and touch a coffin of the dead was unheard of because it was considered an unclean act. Not only had Jesus blown their mind by doing this, He commanded that the young man come to Life. Talk about shock and awe! Father, I believe in You and the power of Your might. I know that in every circumstance, no matter how ugly it may be, there is an fortunate opportunity waiting for me. The key to recognizing the opportunity is my Faith in You. Jesus said, "If you ask anything in My name I will do it." This does not mean I just bark out the name Jesus and use it like a magic wand, but yet, yes it does, in a more spiritual sense. Thank You for this awareness today that I must always cling to You like bark on a tree because it is You that makes the impossible, possible.
Through Jesus Christ's Precious Blood, Most Sacred Name and Most Holy Face. ~Amen
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke
Luke 7:11-17
11 Soon afterward He journeyed to a city called Nain, and His disciples and a large crowd accompanied Him.
12 As He drew near to the gate of the city, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her.
13 When the Lord saw her, He was moved with pity for her and said to her, "Do not weep."
14 He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and He said, "Young man, I tell you, arise!"
15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.
16 Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, exclaiming, "A great prophet has arisen in our midst," and "God has visited His people."
17 This report about Him spread through the whole of Judea and in all the surrounding region.
