MYTH:Fingernails and hair continue to grow after death. TRUTH: First of all, this doesn't even make sense, not to mention it's a creepy and morbid thought that should be reserved for the horror flicks. It's all really just an optical illusion. In other words, your eyes are playing tricks on you. For the body to grow or cells to replicate, the body has to be alive. Further, growing fingernails and hair requires hormones. If the body has died, the body is not manufacturing hormones. When the body dies, it dehydrates and essentially dries up. When the flesh begins to shrivel, it contracts (pulls back) thereby causing the fingernails and the hair to appear as if they have grown longer. Therein lies the optical illusion. BOO!
