When does 'intellectual pride' keep me from listening or am I too 'intellectually proud' to even recognize that?
"It is not intelligence but intellectual pride that shuts people out. Intelligence is a gift, but when it is perverted by pride it becomes a barrier."
I listen with child-like simplicity and curiosity.
For a more enriching experience, go down on your knees to pray or take it one step further and prostrate yourself (lay face down) on the floor while praying.
Father, today's reading is a strong reminder of how 'intellectual pride' can get in the way of listening to Your Word. It is interesting how 'intellectual blocks' are thrown up as a barrier to keep any one of Your children from listening to You or to keep someone else telling one of us about You. I have been guilty of throwing up 'intellectual blocks' when listening to someone else's ethereal, spiritual or religious position. If I am so strong, faithful and certain about You, then what is the problem? Why can't I just listen? Why would I need to argue about it? If someone is not open to Your Word, then they are not open. If someone does not want to hear, then they don't want to hear. Jesus never forced Himself on anyone, so why should I force Him on anyone? Just as Jesus instructed the apostles to do, they were to just shake the dust off their sandals if they were not welcome and walk on. If someone is not open to hearing about You, then it is quite possible my opening in the conversation has not yet come and I should just shake the dust off and know that there is a better timing for my entry. The last thing I should do is allow 'intellectual pride' to keep me from listening because it is quite possible that I could gain a better understanding of the person talking, even if I don't agree with what they are saying.
In the reading below, Jesus speaks pretty much of just letting go of the weight that burdens us. He says that, "My yoke is easy and My burden is light." There have been plenty of times in my Life when someone had it easier than me and offered to help me through a difficult time and I didn't turn down the assistance. Why in the world would I turn down Jesus' help? That big ol' wooden plank (yoke) strapped across an oxen's shoulders has to be heavy and cumbersome, but not Jesus' yoke. He basically says, "Give it to me, I can handle it. Hand it over!" But there I go . . intellectualizing the matter. Intellectual pride is a burden because it removes emotion and stands in only what is logical and rational. When I emotionally disconnect and can no longer feel, then I cannot relate to others, much less connect with You. Intellectual pride removes our child-like curiosity and humility, which leaves us standing in the need to be right. That child-like quality that we are directed to cling to is what keeps us curious and dependent on You for all our answers and everything that we need. It reminds me of the child who wants to carry the heavy bag but two steps onto the parking lot decides it is too much and the parent takes the bag. In a split second, the child accepted the relief and was relieved. That's what I need to do. Just like that, I need to stop intellectualizing my issues and just give You the bag. Thank You for this wonderful awareness today and helping me recognize when 'intellectual pride' gets in the way of connecting with You and doing the right thing.
Through Jesus Christ's Most Precious Blood and Most Holy Face. Amen~
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
25 At that time Jesus declared, "I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes;
26 yea, Father, for such was Thy gracious will.
27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
28 Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light."
