CHEROKEE MYTH
AUTHENTIC HAND-MADE
BEAD JEWELRY
Tipi

Each set of jewelry (below) is named after one of the Myths of the Cherokee. All jewelry on this site is personally made by myself (Dr. Loretta Standley, half-blood Cherokee of the 'EBCI') and my Mom (Mary Standley, full-blood Cherokee of the 'EBCI'). EBCI means 'Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians'.

Since I am a tribal member of the EBCI, I am blessed to know my full tribal lineage. To become a tribal member, you have to prove actual blood kinship. In "James Mooney's History, Myths and Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees", he credits nearly three-fourths of his book including the myths of the Cherokee to a great medicine man named, "Swimmer" (A'yun'ini). Mooney states that Swimmer was his most valuable informant for his book on Cherokee life and thought. Since both of my mom's parents are full-blood this of course makes my mom full-blood. Swimmer is my grandfather's great-grandfather, my mom's great-great grandfather and my great-great-great grandfather of which I'm quite humbled and honored. Swimmer and Mooney spent "day and night, talking and writing" about the Cherokee and it was then that Mooney obtained a journal containing about 120 pages of Swimmer's prayers, songs and prescriptions, which is now in the Smithsonian Institute. Click here to see a picture of Swimmer and to read more about my Cherokee Tribal Citizenship.
