The Qualla Boundary (also called the Qualla and pronounced Kwa-lah) is the territory where the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians reside and location of Cherokee, North Carolina. The name is actually the Cherokee form for the name "Polly" who was an old woman of that name who formerly lived nearby. The Qualla Boundary is located in western North Carolina, just south of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Qualla Boundary is not actually considered a reservation, although it is often referred to as "the rez" or reservation. The Boundary is really a "land trust" supervised by the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs. This land was a very small portion of the expansive original homeland of the expansive Cherokee Nation. The people actually had to purchase back their own land after it was taken over by the US government.
