WILD CHERRY (Prunus virginiana)

DESCRIPTION: The bark from Wild cherry has been used in herbal medicine for years. The bark is extracted from the Prunus serotina tree, native to eastern North America. Wild cherry bark is sold in a supplement form.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: The bark in wild cherry is used in medicines. It helps reduce inflammation and dries tissues. It also helps to relieve colds, bronchitis, whooping cough and other problems within lungs, as well as diarrhea. It’s found in cough syrups as well. In cooking, wild cherry is used to flavor food and beverages.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS: A chemical found in wild cherry called prunasin may lead to birth defects. If you are pregnant or nursing, avoid wild cherry.

PARTS USED: Bark

GENERAL USAGE: Medicine for coughs, cold and diarrhea; Food and beverage.
