BISTORT (Polygonum bistorta)

DESCRIPTION: Bistort is an astringent and is one of the strongest antiseptic herbs there is. Bistort does come from the Buckwheat family of herbs so it can be used as a food in an emergency. Because it contains so much starch, it can be ground up and used as flour as they did during great famines.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS: Bistort has been used for wounds, infectious diseases by driving them out of the body because Bistort makes the body sweat. It has been used for bleeding conditions and when made as a decoction, used as a mouthwash. This is a very old remedy herb like Bilberry. Bistort has been used for gum problems and any mouth inflammations such as canker sores. It is high in Vitamin A, C and B-complex.
POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS: None known at this time.

GENERAL USAGE: Bistort has been used for bleeding conditions, mouth and gum diseases, gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea and dysentery, hemorrhoids, regulating menses, mucuc problems and for expelling worms.
