L-CARNITINE

Meats and Cheeses

L-CARNITINE

DESCRIPTION: L-Carnitine is made from two amino acids, methionine and lysine. It is stored in tissues such as skeletal muscle and heart muscle. Vegetarians are usually low in the storage of carnitine. We can remember carnitine transports because it has "car" in its name. It aids in preventing a fatty build-up, weight loss and it widely used by athletes. L-Carnitine can be manufactured by the body if a B vitamin is regularly taken along with a sufficient amount of iron and the amino acid lysine.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: Helps the body use fat for energy where it is then utilized as a source for muscular activity.

FOOD SOURCES: Protein rich foods: fish, milk and dairy products, red meats, and poultry.
