Activities of Daily Living
November 8th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

When am I doing or giving for appearances only?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Dry skin this time of year is common, especially on the feet, elbows and knees. Use Vaseline (a petroleum-based gel) to lock-in moisture on these dry areas. Put Vaseline on your feet at night, then put on socks and your feet with be much smoother in the morning. This will make it easier to use a pumice stone to scrape off the dead dry areas. You can get a pumice stone at the dollar store. Remember, your feet take you where you need to be, so take better care of your feet.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Movement

Remember from November 4th's posting, 3,500 calories equals 1 pound of fat. That's a helluva lot of calories to consume. At the same time if you cut 3,500 calories from your Life in one week's time, then you will lose 1 pound of fat. Not water weight, FAT! Movement burns calories because your body is literally heating up. It's just the way it is. Move the cheeks of your butt today. That means walk, run, jog, power-walk, dance, treadmill for a minimum of 30 minutes today. Do whatever you need to do to get those buttcheeks wiggling back and forth today.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Lemons are a superfood. They are not only Good for your health, they are Good for your home. A bottle of lemon juice is on your grocery list today. Clean your microwave and remove odors by placing a cup of water with a couple tablespoons of lemon juice in the microwave. Heat the cup to boiling. Let it set for 10 minutes after boiling. Then just wipe away food splatters with a clean cloth.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Recycle your money. Recycling helps you become more aware of where your money goes. Even if you do not have recycling in your area of town, call around to see where you can take your recycling. That's what I have to do and it helps me contribute in my space on the planet. Recycling is awareness! When you throw something away, think dollar signs and that trash will have a whole new meaning. Get the most from your money and recycle it.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

It takes time to form a bad habit, just as it takes time to form Good habits. Give yourself a 40-day challenge. The reason why 30 day programs do not work is because they fall short of the necessary 40 days for transformation to occur. God did everything in 40 days, so we should take a page out of His playbook and do 40 days as well. Use this link 'Affirmations' to help you build solid Good habits that will change your productivity, work ethic and outcomes.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Stainless steel bowls with lids are not cheap but they sure do keep food safe, crisp, fresh and tasty. Get a stainless steel bowl with a lid and make yourself a big salad that you can eat on for the next several days. I keep a big bowl of salad that's ready to be eaten anytime of day. Every 3 days a new salad is made and it stays fresh -- lettuce, spinach, shredded carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, radishes and red/purple onions. It's a salad of virtually no calories and keep my weight in check. The minute you add high caloric foods and dressings, then you take away from the purpose. Watch that salad dressing. in-take!
