Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

What is the best thing that I can do for myself?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

In our bathrooms I have nice fancy towels hanging, BUT I also have a roll of paper towels presented nicely on a flowery glass small plate that sits on the vanity. In this way all guests know to use a paper towel to dry their hands. I honestly would not care if the towels were used (fancy or not) but in my head, the towels are used after the first person uses them.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Movement

Chair Squats: These are tough! Stand in front of a chair with your feet hip-distance apart and toes forward. Lean your chest slightly forward with your arms outstretched in front of you with palms down for balance. Now bend your knees and then lightly tap your butt on the chair. Do not sit! Then stand back up. Keep your weight in your heels and keep your knees over your toes. Do 10 to 12 reps and say, "OW!"

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

To remove candle wax from carpets or fabric furnishings, cover the wax with a brown paper bag and then make several passes over it with a warm iron, moving the brown paper bag each time. You can also use an absorbent material like an old T-shirt for this as well.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

You can save a lot of money on your cable or satellite dish bill by calling them and telling them that you want to unsubscribe to the movie package and then they will likely offer you a better deal. You can unsubscribe anyway and then just subscribe to Netflix or HuluPlus and save a lot more money.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Plug in customer service lines into your cell phone for easy access. You are likely to call for help or ask questions when you have the phone number handy. Make everything easy on yourself.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Before you eat, ask yourself if you are nurturing yourself or nourishing yourself. If you are nurturing yourself then you could eating out of boredom or lack of attention to your health. That's where comfort food comes into play. So before you grab a snack, ask yourself if this is a nurturing or nourishing moment.
