Activities of Daily Living

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

There are all kinds of opinions and ideas over which is best, liquid or bar soap. Since I'm all about 'easily and effortlessly now' I prefer liquid soap simply because there is no clean up of stuck on soap in a soap dish or on a vanity. Liquid soap also makes it a lot easier to keep a shower clean.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Movement

Did you know there is more weight on your low back per square inch when you sit, more than there is when you stand up or lay down? Good posture while seated is 'vital' to your low back health. When you feel your body slump forward into the letter 'C' where your belly relaxes and sticks out, then you must immediately straighten up. Your low back should have a curve in it but in the opposite direction of a slump and your belly should be tightened and pulled in. Now straighten up!

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Make your utility closet or utility space a real utilitarian's dream. I consider myself a utilitarian, where my things have a use or a purpose rather than just fill up drawers and closet. Your utilitarian space should house all of your tape, glue, batteries, cleaners, lightbulbs, etc., ready for 'use'. My utility space is organized in small clear bins, labeled and easily accessed.

Speaking of utilitarian, there is no doubt, when we turn to Light and leave the planet, someone will be going through our personal stuff and more than likely they will be giving our stuff away or throwing most of it away. Why spend your money on things that really do not matter or worse, that do not last. Using your money on education and travel rather than buying more stuff is the lighter and more enLightened path.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Work ethic is defined as the principle that hard work is intrinsically virtuous or worthy of reward. This could mean personal satisfaction, financial kudos or some other worthy benefit. There is a huge difference between the employee who just shows up and the employee who shows up. One shows up to fill a slot and get a paycheck, while the other shows up and makes a difference, gaining both experience and knowledge.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Shop the perimeter of the grocery store if you plan to eat healthier. This is where you will find fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, shrimp, meat, cheese, yogurt, eggs, butter and nuts and seeds. The pharmacy is also on the perimeter of the grocery store where vitamins and supplements are usually found. The isles are where the boxed, packaged, canned, refined, baked and processed foods are located.
