Activities of Daily Living
January 24th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

When did I share something so incredible that my words started with, "You're not going to believe this but..."?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Viruses that cause colds and flu can survive on common surfaces for up to 72 hours. That is a long time. This is exactly why you need to use a disinfecting product on common surfaces such as phone receivers, doorknobs, light switches, and remote controls the minute. When guests leave your home, WIPE IT DOWN!

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Movement

Move it or lose it! Your muscle fibers will lose 100 sarcomere's a day if you do not use the muscle. A sarcomere is a 'structural' unit and there are a bunch of them in one fiber. For instance, one muscle fiber from a biceps muscle may contain 100,000 sarcomeres. Move it or lose it folks! The sarcomere is responsible for muscle contraction. Seriously, your muscles will waste away due to underuse or neglect (it's called atrophy) if you do not move them. At the very least, go for a walk today.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

If you plan to do a huge project clean-up, such as clean the garage, a big closet or basement, then take bites out of it right now by spending one hour a week slowly chewing it down. Then when it comes to your Spring cleaning, this project will run smoothly and effortlessly.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

The only way you are going to save more money is to save more money. That means you spend less money. It's a pretty simple concept. (winky wink) Find a 'Savings App' or 'Money Tracker' App to help you reach your savings goal or to support your new saving habit.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Turn yourself into a 'Human Doing' from a 'Human Being'. We all know when we are just being and not doing. Being is what contributes to procrastination as we hope that something will go away on its own or maybe it might just fix itself. While 'being' works well in meditation, it won't get up and get the job done, but doing will. Get off your butt and start doing. As the Chinese Proverb says, "Talk doesn't cook rice."

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

We eat very little boxed, packaged, canned, refined, baked or processed food. Although we do eat fiber and protein bars. With the exception between Thanksgiving and Christimas, our big clear glass cookie jar is filled with fiber and protein bars. The visual keeps Good health right there. Fill the cookie jar with something other than cookies!

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Movement

Choose two (2) of the 'GLUTAMINE' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.
Get creative!

DESCRIPTION: Glutamine is found in high concentrations in the human brain where it is converted to glutamic acid. Taken in modest amounts, glutamine can substantially increase your production of growth hormone.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: Assists in brain fog, mental alertness and clarity. Decreases sugar cravings. May aid in mental disorders senility and schizophrenia. Maintains a healthy digestive tract and is important in alcoholism.
