Activities of Daily Living
August 30th

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

If I cannot handle a small amount of money, why should I be given more money?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Brush and floss regularly. Research indicates that oral problems can be a symptom of other diseases, such as diabetes. The keyword here is 'symptom'. Research has linked gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, premature birth and even arthritis." The mouth is a portal into the rest of the body." ~Dr. Donald Ratcliffe

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

The job of chronic inflammation is to cause tissue damage or even to the kill tissue. This is why you must address inflammation at the onset. Inflammation is the bodies 'natural response' to heal, not kill. As with everything, too much of a Good thing, isn't. After exercise, one tool for accelerated recovery is to use cold water therapy after your workout to help clear inflammatory biological (cellular) markers. Cold water or ice also lowers inflammation and facilitates muscle repair.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Clear your refrigerator of too many reminders that could end up causing you confusion. Replace the pictures and messages with healthy mottos and pictures that promote Good health. And if you prefer a perfectly clean refrigerator (like me) free of pictures and messages, then take the time to wash it down and clean the top.

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Address the financial elephant in the room. If there is a bill that has been nothing but a pain in your side, then address it today. Pick up the phone and call the person who may have ideas on how to lower or alleviate the payment. If you need to sell something (car or house) start doing your research.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

The minute you feel yourself go into a funk or lazy mode, call yourself out on it and then get up and do the task. Make yourself reflexive to action rather than procrastinate to action. I will typically always volunteer to run downstairs to get something because it makes me get up and go. I like that 'get up and go' feeling. It makes me happy and perky. I think it will do the same for you.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Design a new route in your mind when you go to the grocery store. Shop the entire perimeter first because that is where the 'real food' is located. Boxed, packaged, refined, baked and processed food (fake food or man-made food) is in the aisles.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Choose two (2) of the 'Vitamin D' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.

DESCRIPTION: The best way to get Vitamin D is through exposure to sunlight. Our ability to manufacture Vitamin D from sunlight decreases with age. Deficiencies of Vitamin D can interfer with the utilization of calcium and phosphorus in bone and tooth formation. It can cause irritability and weakness. When severe deficiencies are apparent, Rickets may be common especially in young children, which is Osteomalacia in adults. Vitamin D is soluble in fats and organic solvents. It is relatively stable under refrigeration and it can be stored in the liver. Vitamin D is often associated with Vitamin A. Important in treating osteoporosis, rickets and hypocalcemia while also enhancing the immune system.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: It helps to support healthy bones and calcium and phosphorus absorption from the intestinal tract. Helps to cure rickets. Supports healthy vision. Helps produce blood plasma and regulates the metabolism of minerals. It helps to stabilize heart action and the nervous system. Aids in the normal clotting of blood.

FOOD SOURCES: Alfalfa and their sprouts, avocado, bee pollen, butter, carrots, chickweed, comfrey, cod liver oil, dairy products fortified with Vitamine D, egg yolk, fish liver oils, fish having fat distributed throughout its flesh, garlic, halibut, herring, leafy greens, lemongrass, liver, mackerel, marshmellow root, milk, mushrooms, oatmeal, oysters, salmon, sardines, seeds, sunflower seeds, sweet potato, tuna, vegetable oil and yeast.

Best source is the sunlight (20 minutes a day).
