Activities of Daily Living
August 3rd

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is a real term used in healthcare that refers to daily basic self-care activities in an individual's residence, outdoor environment or both. The ability or inability that an individual performs their ADLs is a measure of the functional status of the individual, particularly the injured, those with disabilities and the elderly. Very young children require assistance from adults to perform ADLs since they have not yet developed the skills necessary to perform ADLs on their own.

Basic ADLs (bADLs) are the things we normally do such as bathing, dressing, feeding ourselves, functional mobility, personal hygiene and grooming. Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are things such as housework, money management, preparing meals, shopping and work.

Sometimes it is necessary to review the rules of kindergarten to remember how to be nice to others and use Good manners. And sometimes we just need to go back to the basics of the 'Activities of Daily Living' in order to take better care of ourselves and start living Life rightly.

Below you will see 7 simple activities to accomplish at some point during the day all under the motivation of the the daily mentation question below. You have 24 hours to get through this question along with the 7 activities. READY? SET? GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Mentation Question

Who or what is my Source?

Activities of Daily Living - Hygiene and Grooming

Dirty shoes is the equivalent of having a bad hair day, it's just at the other end of your body. Remember, your feet take you where you want to go and where you need to be. Make sure your shoes are clean before you even put them on your feet. You can pick up inexpensive and perfectly Good shoe cleaning products and buffers at the dollar store for a quick shoe shine.

Activities of Daily Living - Physical Activity

You can get a pedometer for as low as $6 to $8. A pedometer helps track how many steps you take in one day. 10,000 or more steps is the best, which would be approximately 5 miles total. That's 2,000 steps per mile. A pedometer will give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you on track.

Activities of Daily Living - Housework and Cleaning

Chances are you probably have one or two socks where the sock monster (dryer) ate the other sock. Use the single sock as a dust rag. Just stick your hand in the sock and dust away. While you have your hand in that sock, run your hand along the tops of the doors and along all of the pictures in the house. It probably won't even take you 15 minutes. GO!

Activities of Daily Living - Financial Management

Call your insurance company today and ask if they can give you a better rate. Whether that rate is home, auto, etc., just make the call. Let them know you want to get the most for your money. They should assume you are shopping around. Then call a couple of other insurance companies for comparison now that you know what you are paying for and what you are getting.

Activities of Daily Living - Work and Productivity

Take the 'Do it now!' approach. I would rather 'do it now' simply because I don't know what I'll be doing later and I don't want to be tied down. Folks, skip the lolly-gagging and do it now, whatever 'it' is, do it now and you will have more time for yourself later.

Activities of Daily Living - Food Preparation

Did you know that cooking without lids can take three times as much energy to cook than it does with lids. There is a reason why pots and pans come with a lid, so use them.

Activities of Daily Living - Today's Healthful Nutrient

Choose two (2) of the 'Manganese' foods below
and incorporate them into your diet today.

DESCRIPTION: The word manganese comes from the Greek word for magic, which might give you an idea that manganese works magic in the body. In small amounts, this trace mineral is required to manufacture enzymes which are needed to metabolize protein and fat.

FOOD SOURCES: Avocados, dried peas, whole grains, pineapple juice, green leafy vegetables, blueberries, wheat bran, wheat germ, egg yolks, whole grains, legumes, spinach, seeds, nuts, cocoa, shellfish, and tea.
